5 Essential Elements for Home Offices
It’s already know that many people are now launching their companies from home and while that’s great, creating a space respected by your family and clients is another thing. Kits Media carved a full office space out of part of their living room and use the front door as the entrance to their company. It helps truly separate work from home and clients don’t feel they’ve just walked into your bedroom, closet, etc. Let’s take a look at this great space and the 5 elements that make this home office more of an office VS. a bedroom used as an office.
1. Entryway
Let me point out something here, the minute you walk in, you are “in the office.” There isn’t a kitchen or walkway you have to go through keeping it professional, not just some of the time.
TIP: If there is no way to get around this, just remember to keep personal items away from this area. The photos of your wedding are probably gorgeous but if you want it to really feel like this is your headquarters, move the photos and other memorabilia to another part of the house.
2. Waiting Area
Almost every office has a waiting area for clients or some sort of seating arrangement. As soon as you walk in there are two chairs and a separate table for visitors.
TIP: If it’s not possible to dedicate part of your living room for this, try to arrange your current living in a way that’s easy and comfortable for clients to visit. Instead of having two chair facing the other couches, turn them around so they’re in front of the door or closer to your actual office area.
3. FIling/Storage Area
I bet your office has one of these too and the folks at Kits Media made sure to include the same here. No rummaging through a closet that’s filled with half of your kids toys and half of your client invoices. Keeping it separated is key.
TIP: You may not have the space to keep files outside of the closet so if you need to have your files put away, use file boxes that are properly labeled and dedicate at least one side of the closet for this.
4. Work area for yourself + employees
If you noticed in the photos there are a few different desk areas which of course every office needs if you have an employee. Sharing one desk is not an option even if you do work from home.
TIP: If you’re tight on space, try two small but separate desks to accommodate an additional worker.
5. Keep it Separate
Notice the pretty green curtain in the photos? It’s probably obvious but it’s definitely worth mentioning to keep your office area away from the rest of your house. Neither your clients nor your family will appreciate mixing the two.
TIP: An easy way to keep things separate is to use a curtain. If it doesn’t fit in with the aesthetic or if you can’t do it, try painting the walls in this area one color to differentiate it from the rest of the house.
