Idea Room - Why You Need One

by Sayeh Pezeshki

When I mention “Idea Room” I’m talking about a room where the magic happens. Not a traditional conference room or plain office, but a space within your office that helps create, move and grow creativity. If you’re looking to stay ahead of the competition, keep your employees motivated and overall have a great work environment then you’ll be needing one of these.

 What it’s used for:

  • Brainstorming, noodling on ideas, creating
  • Meetings and presentations

In a nutshell: Where the magic happens

Size, Shape and what it looks like:

Depending on the size of your company, this may vary. Generally speaking though, you want something not too small and not too big. A great size room for a group of five for example would be about 170 square feet, (34 sq. ft per person). If you choose a room that’s too large it may become distracting and if you have a room too small, it may feel stifling for some.

The layout of the room needs to make it easy for everyone to communicate with each other without any obstacles. A round table for example, is your best choice for an Idea Room.

Make it easy to show your ideas

Passing around a report is one way to tell the group your idea but I wouldn’t recommend it. Have at least one wall be a white board, chalkboard or even a wall of glass where you can easily write + erase your thoughts. It also allows for others to join in on the idea storm/creation.

Create an Idea Room Today

You don’t need much to get started, just keep the things I mentioned in mind. Start with a picking the part of your office for the Idea Room and go at it. Want an entire wall to be a chalkboard or whiteboard? No problem, they’re got paint for that now. Have everyone in the office contribute to the room in some way and you’ll have more appreciation for the space and more motivation to get in there.
