Welcoming Waiting Areas
Ever notice that when you walk into an office that has a dirty, crowded or not so inviting waiting area, it makes you want to run for the hills? In business, it may sway your decision making on whether you want to work with that business or not. No, it’s not shallow; it’s just what we humans do. Just as you should take care of other parts of your office, your waiting room is definitely a space not to be neglected-ever.
Great design in this area is a given so let’s talk about the size, shape and color.
Size
This waiting area is too small, this one is too big, and so what size is just right? Unfortunately, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all option here. Think about how many people visit your office per day and the typical time they spend in this area and plan from there. Typically it’s 22 square feet per person in the waiting area.
Shape
I don’t mean square or circular rooms, but the way your furniture is laid out. If you want a waiting area that invites conversation, arrange the furniture as such. If conversation isn’t something you want to focus on, individual chairs laid against the wall (rectangular) will fit the bill. Think about your needs and adjust accordingly.
Color
Yellow is considered the most inviting color, and it’s actually been proven that houses painted yellow sell faster than those in other colors. It’s a cheerful color that can actually bring in feelings of optimism as well. As I said back in my Goodbye Manila, Hello Color post, use yellow in your lobby/reception area where clients come in.
Your waiting area tells me everything I need to know.
The waiting area tells me everything about a company within 30 seconds of being there. It’s where I meet the receptionist and observe the company logo, furniture, wall art and overall atmosphere. Though it may not be fair to judge a book by it’s cover or in this case, a waiting room-it’s still something we all do. Think about that before deciding you don’t need to update the furniture.
