I’m always on the look out for free tools to help improve my business. So when I got the iPhone, I immediately started searching for apps that would do just that.

Here are nine of my favorite free apps for small businesses.

1. CamCard Lite

You probably get a lot of business cards — right? Since I hate having extra paper clutter lying around, I was thrilled to find CamCard Lite. It’s a free app that allows you to take a photo of any business card and then save it to your phone book or your email account. No more keeping stacks of business cards and no more entering the wrong information!

2. Toggl

Toggl is a really cool time-tracking app that offers a free account for up to 5 users. This is a great app for any small business that requires team collaboration because Toggl allows you to see what your team members are doing and provide instant feedback.

3. Evernote

Evernote is basically a virtual storage-system for all your information. It gives you the ability to photograph anything and upload it immediately. You can categorize and tag the information as well so you’ll always be able to find whatever you want whenever you need it.

So not only is Evernote great for storing and organizing business ideas, it’s also fantastic for organizing recipes, articles, ideas, etc for your personal life!

4. Dropbox

I have a mini obsession with Dropbox — and I absolutely love the app. Simply install Dropbox (for free) on your work computer, home computer, laptop, iPad and/or iPhone; and you’ll have instant access to all your documents all the time.

You can also create shared folders and share the information inside those folders with coworkers (or family members) so everyone can collaborate on the same documents without sending emails and attachments all day.

5. Orchestra To-Do

This app allows you to share to-dos and even assign tasks to others — like your coworkers, team members, spouse or teen-age children!  You can even speak your tasks and to-do while on the road.

6. PayPal

Almost every business I know uses PayPal in some form or another — so of course you’ll want access to your PayPal account on your phone right? This app allows you to send and receive transactions right from your phone — and of course, you can always check your balance at any time.

7. Expensify

This app allows you to digitally track and store all your business expenses and mileage — which is great for those of us on the road a lot. It connects with hundreds of different bank accounts and credit cards, offers helpful graphs and reports, and even allows you to track cash expenses just by snapping a picture of the receipt!

8. Manic Time

Manic Time is an easy way to track exactly how much time you spend online (a.k.a. not being productive!) It even creates graphs to show you the applications you used most, the websites you visited most, and it tracks time on a daily and weekly basis.

9. ReadItLater

As a blogger, I’m always interested in what other bloggers are saying… so when I have a website or article I want to read but either don’t have the time (or don’t want to read it on my phone), I add it to ReadItLater. Then when I have more time, I simply login from my computer, and the articles are ready and waiting.

These are just a few of the apps that have saved me lots of time and helped me to be more productive as I run my business.
